Why This Matters

Every conversation about mental health is an act of trust.

When someone shares their story at an event, asks a question at a resource table, or engages with our content online, they're trusting that the person in front of them will respond with care. As a Silence the Shame volunteer or contractor, you carry that trust on our behalf. This onboarding series exists so you never have to guess. It grounds you in who we are, how we show up in community, and how to do this work in a way that protects the people we serve, our mission, and you.

What You'll Walk Away With

  • How to lead with empathy and use language that reduces stigma rather than reinforcing it

  • The professional standards that guide how we represent STS in every space

  • A practice of cultural humility: listening first, honoring lived experience, and recognizing what you don't know

  • Clarity on your role, including what's in scope, what isn't, and when to connect someone with further support

  • Knowledge of the resources available, so you can point people in the right direction with confidence

  • Clear expectations and boundaries, including how to care for your own wellbeing while doing this work

  • Who This Is For

This series is required for all new STS volunteers and contractors, including event ambassadors, workshop facilitators, and program support staff. No clinical or mental health background is needed. You just need to bring your willingness to learn and your commitment to showing up with care.

  • How It Works

The course is self-paced and takes about 25 minutes to complete. Please finish it before your first assignment or event. Once you complete it, you'll receive a certificate of completion and next steps from our volunteer coordinator.
